Our goal is to enhance upper-division mathematics courses with data-driven applications. Our approach has two unique features. First, we present real-world data applications as motivation for mathematics concepts, rather than as codas after the main melody. Second, our activities are designed to be open ended explorations into the data applications. Students should come away from these modules with new appreciation of the mathematics in their courses, and the utility of that material to their everyday lives. They should gain confidence that they have the skills and ability to tackle open-ended, research-like problems.
We are currently in the development and testing phase of classroom materials, and plan to make annotated materials with Matlab/Octave code publicly available in the future. We also hope to run quick-start workshops to help interested college educators integrate the materials and methods into their classes.
